In the 17th and 18th centuries, Newfoundland and Ireland were close trading partners. Many Irish moved to the Canadian colony for its prodigious fishing. By 1840 half of Newfoundland’s population was Irish. Today the Newfoundland accent is often mistaken for an Irish one.
