Ṭāriq ibn Ziyād, the Muslim ruler of Tangier, routed the Visigothic ruler in 711 and within a few years controlled all of Spain. The Reconquista began with the Battle of Covadonga about 718, when Asturias engaged the Moors, and it ended in 1492, when Ferdinand and Isabella (the Catholic Monarchs) conquered Granada. The most active period of the Reconquista took place during the 11th–13th century, with most of Spain under Christian control by 1250.
