Liu Shiying (born September 24, 1993, Yantai, China) is a Chinese track-and-field athlete who competes in the javelin throw event. She became the first Asian woman to win a gold medal in the event at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, which were held in 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Early life and career
In 2012 Liu participated in the Asian Junior Championships in Colombo, Sri Lanka, where she finished with the gold medal after a throw of 53.02 meters (173 feet 11 2/5 inches). At that year’s World Junior Championships in Barcelona, Spain, Liu won the silver medal with a throw of 59.20 meters (194 feet 2 7/10 inches). She surpassed the 60-meter (197-feet) mark in 2013 at the China’s 12th National Games, where she placed 4th.
At the 2015 Asian Championships in Wuhan, China, Liu won the gold medal with a throw of 61.33 meters (201 feet 2 ½ inches). At the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, she finished in 13th place in the qualifying round and did not advance to the finals. The next year she placed 8th at the World Athletics Championships in London. Liu had a successful 2018 Asian Games, held in Jakarta and won the gold medal with a throw distance of 66.09 meters (216 feet 9 9/10 inches). That year she recorded a personal best distance of 67.12 meters (220 feet 2 ½ inches). She won the silver medal at the World Athletics Championships in Doha, Qatar, in 2019.

Liu had a successful 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. Despite being injured, Liu had a throw of 66.34 meters (217 feet 7 13/16 inches) on her first try. (Each competitor was given six attempts.) The other competitors were unable to beat that mark, and Liu won the gold medal. However, she did not qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
